The creator of Mortal Kombat has posted a screenshot from the cancelled HD version of the original game.

Ed Boon tweeted what he said is a screenshot from "Hi-Res Kombat".

He added: "One of these days I'll post an article explaining how the MK HD edition never came to be."

It is not clear whether the image is an actual screenshot from the game itself, or a conceptual design.

Boon later posted a GIF of an HD version of Scorpion, one of the popular fighting title's characters.

In response to one user he wrote: "Yea, lots of stories. Lots of thrown out work too. :("

The original Mortal Kombat was released in 1992 and the franchise is among the most successful and well-known series of fighting games.
